Monitor Audio Apex Series
January 19, 2010 By Liz Palacios
Apex is Monitor Audio’s new flagship line of compact speakers. It includes three models: the A10, the A40 and the AW-12.
The A10 is a stand or wall-mounted compact satellite that can be used as a mini-monitor, or with the A450 and AW-12 models in a multi-channel system.
For wall installations, the A10 comes with a die-cast metal wall bracket. The position of the speaker can be adjusted with the bracket, which can be pivoted 30 degrees in any direction.
The A10 Stand is pre-wired with Monitor’s Silver Pureflow cable, and the A10 speaker can be directly connected to the system once it is placed on the stand. The A10 Stand is sold separately for a suggested retail price of $400 for a pair.
The Apex A40 can be used as a main speaker. It is designed so that it can be placed vertically or horizontally (depending on your aesthetic preference).
The speaker uses the 1” (25mm) gold dome C-CAM tweeter, which is also found on the A10; and is surrounded by dual 5.25inch (140mm) C-CAM bass/mid drivers. The A40 bracket holds the speaker almost flush to the wall, and allows it to be tilted, as well.
Last in the Apex series is the AW-12. It is an active subwoofer that is compact in design. It features a front 12” C-CAM driver and a 500-watt Class D amplifier. Monitor Audio claims it delivers high output with low distortion, without overheating.
